Hey everyone, I wanted to start a new discussion about transvection, the night flight, hedge-riding, or, in modern terms, astral travel, but focusing on the use of flying ointments or other magical stimuli that induce OBE.

Since my practice tends to be very hands-on and relies heavily on physical materials rather than just mental visualization, the idea of using actual botanical ointments to facilitate astral travel is really intriguing to me. It seems like a compelling way to bridge the gap between the physical body and the unseen, using a tangible, earthly catalyst to help shift your consciousness.

For those of you who actively work with tools to aid your journey, how do you find it changes the experience compared to just using standard meditation or trance techniques? Does having that physical, botanical trigger make the travel feel more vivid or alter the way you navigate once you’re out?

I’d love to hear what kinds of roots, resins, or traditional blends you all are working with, and any experiences you’ve had relying on ointments or oils or even crystal to help cross the hedge.

Not all that glitters is gold, but I’m going to take it just to be sure.

I really love that you brought this up. I’ve always been into using physical stuff like ointments and herbs to get into those states. For me, it totally changes the experience compared to just sitting and visualizing. When I use a botanical ointment or oil, it kind of gives me a physical anchor, you know?

Like, it helps me relax faster and get deeper into that space. The whole thing feels way more real and vivid, like I’m actually crossing into another realm instead of just imagining it.

Some of the things I’ve used include mugwort, which is great for dreams and astral stuff, wormwood, super powerful, so I’m careful with it, and a mix of mugwort and wormwood in ointments. I also like adding a touch of frankincense or myrrh oil. Their scent and energy seem to open a doorway somehow. Honestly, it’s crazy how much more detailed and alive the journey feels when I’ve got something tangible helping me get there.

I’ve also noticed that having a physical trigger like that helps me stay grounded while I’m out there. It’s like, the ointment or scent reminds me, “Hey, this is real. You’re really shifting consciousness,” and that makes me more confident to move around once I’ve crossed the hedge. It’s a different vibe, more tactile, more connected to the physical, but still taking you into those unseen places.

Would love to hear what others are working with too. I’m always messing around with new blends or crystals to help cross. Definitely a different experience than just sitting still and visualizing. It’s more hands-on and real, but still deep in the unseen.

Thanks for sparking this, it’s such a cool way to work with the spiritual using what’s right in front of us.

I’m glad you brought up the tethering aspect. That’s exactly why I prefer working with tangible materials. When you’re hedge-riding, it’s incredibly easy to drift or get lost. Having that somatic connection—the literal physical sensation or scent of the ointment sinking into your skin—acts like a heavy-duty anchor line right back to your physical baseline.

Mugwort and wormwood are classic heavy hitters for a reason. They force the shift without overcomplicating the chemistry. Throwing resins like frankincense or myrrh into the mix is a solid, practical move too. Aside from their track record of cutting through spiritual fog and opening thresholds, they essentially act as a battery for the working. They empower the whole blend, giving it the raw energy and fuel you need to sustain the flight while you’re out there.

Have you noticed if introducing the wormwood changes the actual texture of the flight compared to just using mugwort on its own @bella ? I know wormwood has a reputation for making the environment feel a bit more aggressive or chaotic if you aren’t careful with the blend.
